Supprot for international students "stuck" in Adelaide

People are doing it tough during COVID-19, tougher than ever and Anglicare's Food Drive is set to support International Students "stuck" in Adelaide and you can donate locally.

Fr Thomas has recently spoken and visited with many of these students who are currently stuck in Australia. There studies are continuing online but their income, mostly normally derived from part time employment in the hospitality industry has mostly dried up in the current crises. This employment would normally cover their cost of living having had to pay up front for all their study courses.

These students are not eligible for government subsidies and support like domestic students and many are in the position where they have to rely on charitable organisations to survive. The Anglican Churches of Mt Barker and Strathalbyn have decided to try and make a difference to the lives of these people and so, through Anglicare SA have begun a food drive and are asking the community to assist with donations of non-perishable food items.

This is an example of one of the Food Kits we have been delivering to International Students in Adelaide who have been hit hard by the global pandemic. We also provide a kit with toiletries and other essential items.

It has truly been a blessing to see how the people of our congregations and their communities within our Parishes of Strathalbyn and Mt Barker have gotten behind this cause to enact the gospel values of kindness, compassion and care for the stranger.

The word of this initiative has spread far and wide to the point that when Fr. Thomas and Trevor were visiting an Asian Grocery Store to purchase more food for these kits that a stranger who had heard about the work we are doing also added ten more kits to their purchase from his own pocket, totalling over $900!

This is how Jesus can inspire all of us to achieve the miracle of feeding the hungry.

God Bless you all, especially those who have given so generously to this cause.

Anglicare SA we're simply amazed at how communities across South Australia are rallying together to support international students in need due to COVID-19. On Saturday morning ofthe 8th of August those who had been collecting food for those in need gathered in Goodwood to  assisting partners distribute food and supplies to around 80 international students and families and raised awareness for others who need similar help.
